Today’s challenge is to write about my favourite quote… This is a tough one! I’m a huge bookworm, as I’ve mentioned, but I’ve read so many books I have a huge amount of quotes I’ve loved over the years.
One of my favourite books is Wuthering Heights so a lot of my favourite quotes would be from that, “He’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same,” studying the novel gave me a real interest in literature and influenced my decision to study English in UCD, I studied various literature genres and modules during my course but this novel will always stand out.
I love Shakespeare too, having studied his work for my degree! “Doubt thou the stars are fire; doubt that the sun doth move; doubt truth to be a liar; but never doubt I love.” One of my favourite tv shows of all time, Sons of Anarchy, is inspired and influenced by Hamlet and regularly makes reference to Shakespeare and his various quotes, “these violent delights have violent ends. And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, which, as they kiss, consume.” A quote that perhaps could have been written about me, one that will always stick in my mind, “and though she be but little, she is fierce.”
Most of the quotes I’ve chosen are literary rather than from film or tv, probably because I spend most of my time with my head stuck in a book, I’ve always loved Oscar Wilde and he once said, ” you can never be overdressed or overeducated.” A rule I certainly like to live by.
But now on to Disney, my absolute favourite thing in the world! My favourite film is Pocahontas without a doubt and the reason? “I know every rock and tree and creature, it has a life, has a spirit, has a name.” The whole film and the theme of nature and respecting the world around you is the philosophy I live by. It’s also insanely romantic and heart-wrenching, “I’d rather die tomorrow than live a hundred years without knowing you”
